Christmas Cheer for children of Second Creek
Excited screams, laughter and big smiles greeted members of the Harry’s team as they arrived at A.W. Barnes Primary School on Friday, 24 November 2006. The smiles belonged to the children of the Second Creek Informal settlement who had been given a Christmas present of a lifetime. A special Christmas party, organised by the Special Crimes Unit of East London proved to be a resounding success.

The unit had organised a memorable day for the children which kicked off with a ride in a police van. Once the children returned, they were entertained by the SAPS band. As the band played the latest tunes, the children let loose and showed their amazing dance talents. Bystanders couldn’t help but join in on the fun and dancing. A dance group then left the children spellbound after having performed a piece to Josh Groban’s “You raise me up”.

The party then moved inside, where the children were treated to colourful balloons, hats, party packs, cake, food and cooldrinks. The Crimes unit had approached companies in EL to sponsor goods which included hygienic packs, clothes, underwear and food. Event co-ordinator Elna Smit said that she had been “truly overwhelmed” by the positive response from all the sponsors. Harry’s had organised packs which included stationery, t-shirts and underwear which was handed out to the children. The event was rounded off with a Father Christmas to entertain the children |

A “thumbs up” from children at the Party
|
| The party was truly a moving and touching experience for all that were there. The team at Harry’s were gratefulto be part of such a worthwhile project. As we move into the festive season, we urge everyone to think of those less privileged than ourselves. Remember the season of giving, and most importantly – that one person can indeed make a difference to the world.
